Somatic Life Coaching Frequently Asked Questions

What will we actually do during the session?

Somatic life coaching is an experience. Just like its hard to know what swimming in the ocean actually feels like until you actually dive in, it's a challenge to describe what somatic coaching feels like until you actually begin.

We use a wide variety of techniques that involve a combination of dialogue, movement, breathing, and interacting with the space around you. The techniques are designed to help you tune into your body and develop a deep inner awareness to guide you towards what you truly want ... and give you the tools to create it in real and sustainable ways.

What is somatic life coaching like, and does it take a long time to see results?

Even though we may often be addressing difficult or painful issues, overall, somatic life coaching is FUN. It is a myth that healing has to be really hard work. It's also a myth that healing has to take a really, really long time.

Firstly, life is short and we've already suffered enough ... we might as well start having fun right now! We move at a pace that feels friendly, nourishing, and enjoyable for you and allows you to integrate what you are learning.

And from a physiological point of view, you form new neural synapses about 40 times faster when you are having fun! This means you are able to learn, reprogram, and transform your nervous system ... and thus your old patterns ... much faster and more effectively if you are enjoying yourself.

Why are the coaching sessions done virtually?

Virtual coaching sessions offer many advantages over in-person sessions. Most importantly, they allow you to be in your own space, which significantly opens up the creative possibilities we are able to access. We might use objects or different spaces in your home to enhance whatever techniques we are using in the moment. Moreover, somatic coaching is designed to make real, tangible changes in your daily life, and being in your own environment during the session supports that level of change.

Do you work with couples and people in non-traditional relationships?

Yes. When I work with couples, the relationship itself is the "client." This means I would only work with the individuals involved together in the context of the relationship. I would not work with them individually one-on-one in addition to the couple's coaching.

Do your work with trauma survivors or people with a high level of stress and anxiety?

Yes. Somatic life coaching can be extremely beneficial for healing trauma, elevated stress responses and anxiety. Many of the techniques we use are designed to not only calm, but reprogram the stuck "fight-flight-freeze-faint" response that is often present in these situations.

The techniques help release the "hold" the old experiences and belief systems have had on you ... and also create new, sustainable patterns that are in alignment with how your true, authentic self really wants to experience the world.

Do you work with kids?

Yes. Children often respond very well to somatic coaching. The techniques are fun, creative, and involve movement, so kids can easily engage.

However, it is very important that the child actually wants to participate in the coaching. When parents try to force their children into coaching in hopes of "fixing" behavioral issues, the results are not beneficial for anyone.

Does health insurance cover somatic life coaching?

Health insurance rarely covers somatic coaching. However, clients are sometimes able to receive financial assistance through an employer or organization that has a progressive employee wellness plan.
